Steering Components Aren't Something to Put Off
Tie rods connect your steering rack to your wheels. Ball joints connect your wheel hub to your suspension control arms. Together, they're what keeps your wheels pointed in the direction you're steering, and what keeps them attached to the car the way they should be.
When tie rods wear out, the steering starts to feel imprecise. The car wanders on the highway. You find yourself constantly making small corrections. Clunking over bumps shows up. Eventually, severe wear means the car goes where it wants rather than where you point it.
Ball joint failure is more dramatic. A worn ball joint allows the wheel to move in ways it shouldn't. In extreme cases, a ball joint that separates completely, the wheel tilts outward and you lose control. That's why we don't soften how we talk about these: inspect them, replace them when worn, and don't wait on it.

Tie Rod Warning Signs
Steering wheel has play or looseness, turn the wheel slightly and nothing happens
Car drifts or wanders, requires constant corrections on a straight road
Clunking or knocking from the front when going over bumps
Uneven tire wear, especially on inner or outer edges
Front end vibration felt through the steering wheel
Ball Joint Warning Signs
Clunking, popping, or creaking from the front suspension
Excessive vibration through the steering wheel
Tire wear that's uneven or hard to explain
Car pulls to one side
Front end feels unstable, especially over rough pavement
Alignment After Suspension Work, Required, Not Optional
Replacing control arms or bushings changes your front end geometry. Without a proper alignment after, your tires will wear unevenly and the car won't track straight. We make a preliminary toe adjustment, but a four-wheel alignment at an alignment shop is required after this job. We'll recommend a reputable alignment shop in the Medford area.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How urgent is a worn ball joint or tie rod? A: Urgent. These are steering and suspension components. A tie rod or ball joint that fails while driving can cause a loss of vehicle control. If you're experiencing symptoms, don't drive on it any more than necessary.
Q: What's the difference between inner and outer tie rod ends? A: The outer tie rod connects to the steering knuckle at the wheel. The inner connects to the steering rack or gearbox. Both can wear out independently. We inspect both and replace what's needed.
Q: Do I need an alignment after these repairs? A: Yes, every time. Tie rod replacement changes your toe angle, and ball joint replacement changes camber. Without a post-repair alignment, your tires will wear incorrectly and the car won't track straight.
Q: Can I have both tie rods and ball joints done in the same visit? A: Yes — and it's efficient to do so. If we're already into the front end, doing multiple components in one visit saves time and labor.
