Your Engine Should Run at a Steady, Normal Temperature, If It Doesn't, This Is Often Why

The thermostat is a simple valve with one job: regulate coolant flow between the engine and the radiator so the engine stays at its optimal operating temperature. Cold engine? Thermostat closes and coolant stays in the engine to warm it up faster. Hot engine? Thermostat opens and routes coolant through the radiator to cool it down

When thermostats fail, they tend to do it in one of two ways. Stuck open, the engine runs chronically cold, takes forever to warm up, the heater barely works, and fuel economy suffers because cold engines run rich. Stuck closed, and that's the dangerous one. Coolant can't flow through the radiator and the engine overheats fast. We diagnose first. Then we replace with a quality pump and a new gasket, refill and bleed the coolant system, and pressure test before we leave. If your timing belt is near its interval, we strongly recommend doing it at the same time, you're already in that area of the engine and the labor overlap is significant.

It's a relatively inexpensive part, but the job involves draining and refilling the coolant system and properly bleeding air out of the circuit afterward. Done right, it's a solid repair. Done sloppy, with air pockets left in the system, and you'll have hot spots and ongoing temperature issues.

What's Included

  • Cooling system diagnostic to confirm thermostat failure

  • Thermostat and housing gasket/O-ring replacement

  • Coolant drain and correct refill

  • Air bleed procedure to remove any trapped air

  • Temperature gauge monitoring after service

  • Hose condition inspection while system is open

  • Carfax VIN service record

Signs of a Bad Thermostat

  • Temperature gauge runs noticeably low, engine won't reach normal operating temp

  • Temperature gauge climbs higher than usual or spikes suddenly

  • Heater blows cold or barely warm air even when engine is warm

  • Engine takes unusually long to warm up in cold weather

  • Fuel economy has gotten worse for no obvious reason

  • Coolant leak near the thermostat housing

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is it dangerous to drive with a bad thermostat? A: A stuck-open thermostat causes long-term efficiency problems but isn't immediately dangerous. A stuck-closed thermostat can cause rapid overheating that damages the engine. If your temp gauge is rising, stop driving.

Q: Can you just remove the thermostat and skip replacing it? A: We don't recommend it. Without a thermostat, the engine runs too cool — hurts fuel economy, increases emissions, and can cause condensation and sludge buildup over time.

Q: Does thermostat replacement include a coolant refill? A: Yes. We drain the coolant to access the housing, replace the thermostat and gasket, then refill and properly bleed the system before we leave.

Q: Do you service cooling systems in Jacksonville and Phoenix? A: Yes — Jacksonville, Phoenix, Talent, Ashland, and all areas within 15 miles of Medford are in our service zone
